My focus for the last three years has been to build birdhouses that birds will really use. In the past when I was shopping at gift shops and big box stores I saw that what was being offered did not have the basic functionality that they should.

A birdhouse needs 5 things overall. First is drainage. Water comes in the portal and needs a way out. Second is ventilation that is protected from weather intrusion. Thirdly,there must be a way to open up the birdbox to clean it out from year to year. The fourth thing is the correct portal size ( different species prefer a smaller opening)  and protection of the opening from larger birds and chewing rodents. The fifth and most important is a "ladder" for the hatchlings to make their way out of the birdbox.

This knowledge and more that I have gleaned along the way has guided me in many ways from wood selection to eco friendly paints and varnishes. Oh, and I make little wooden Christmas trees decorated with glass bits and baubles too!
